Summer time with Troop 109:

Troop 109 just finished up with summer camp and our 18 scouts that attended came home with over 30 merit badges and other awards. Scouts worked on numerous merit badges from swimming, canoeing sailing to leatherwork, weather geology, cooking and rifle and shotgun shooting. Scouts also went climbing and white water rafting. In spite of the exceptionally hot weather the scouts still had a great time. I know they frequented the ice cream stand at the trading post on a regular basis.

Summer camp is not the only thing that kept Troop 109 scouts busy this summer. Several scouts attended a second week of camp with our friends from Troop 13 in Groton and earned even more merit badges. We also had two scouts attend the National Scout Jamboree held at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia. This was an event that was home to over 44,000 scouts and scouters for 10 days. Scouts were able to rappel, bike, hike, scuba dive and trade patches with scouts from all over the country and even some international scouts. One other scout was selected to attend NYLT (National Youth Leader Training) which is a 1 week leadership training program designed for older scouts that are taking on leadership positions. One of last year’s NYLT graduates from our troop was asked back to be on staff for this year’s program. As you can see Troop 109 scouts have kept themselves very busy this summer.

In a few very short weeks we will start back up with a new scouting year. Preparations have already started for our annual Selden Island campout. Soon after will be a climbing day and then a fall camporee. With all of these activities and the upcoming events and program we should have a number of scouts advancing in rank at the next court of honor in October.
