Greetings from Troop 109

Troop 109 has started back into the scouting year in a big way. Our first campout of the year was to Selden Island on the Connecticut River. It was one of the best campouts that I have ever been on. 9 brave scouts set out onto the Connecticut River with paddles in hand to canoe to Selden Island. 8 scouts made it without falling into the water. While at Selden the scouts showed a tremendous amount of scout spirit. We canoed around the island on the Saturday of the campout. We went a total of 5 miles around the island, stopping halfway to have lunch. Back at camp later in the day we held some scout skill and knowledge games and worked on advancement. Our campsite was right on the water. Check out the photo album and Selden Island 2008 pictures.

Our troop will have a new look in the form of a custom neckerchief representative of the origin of our troop number “109.” The new neckerchief depicts a PT (Patrol Torpedo) boat. The neckerchief represents PT-109 which was the source for the origin of our troop’s number. Back in 1967 Troop 109 was formed and at this same time the recent assassination of JFK was still on the minds of our founding troop leaders and the community. Our founders were able to choose their troop’s number and since the number “109” was available they thought it a fitting tribute to number our troop after the late President’s PT boat, which he commanded in the South Pacific during World War II.

Along with a new look comes some new adventures. Our troop will be doing some more canoeing but we will also have some adventures on dry land. We have started a rock climbing program and have completed the needed training. So in a couple of weeks we will start rock climbing. Rest assured that other challenges await Troop 109. We have campout and camporees coming up in the near future and then winter camping will be right around the corner.

Check back often to follow up on the adventures of Troop 109.
