Fall is full of scouting activities for Troop 109,

After a busy summer there is no rest for Troop 109. We started out with a tropical storm which delayed the start to our scouting year a bit and some heavy rains and flood warnings derailed our annual canoe trip but the Scout’s spirit was not derailed. Instead of the canoe trip we salvaged the day with an activity day of scout skills and hiking. Many scouts completed enough requirements to earn themselves another rank advancement. About half of the scouts in the troop advanced a rank at the October Court of Honor.

October saw Troop 109 working with the other town scout troops to put on our districts Fall Camporee. We used October as a shakedown weekend to test out our events and plan out all of the aspects of a camporee. After we worked out all of the bugs we put on the actual event over the first weekend in November. Our three town troops hosted over 15 troops from the district and ran 10 events all centered around shooting sports. We had events ranging from rifle shooting to spit balls and everything in between. We even had our own version of angry birds where a trebuchet (kind of like a catapult) launched baseballs over 80 feet to knock down a pyramid of pails. Most all of the events were run by scouts from the staff troops with the assistance of adult leaders and a number of Cadets from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy who volunteered their time to assist us.

Troop 109 also participated in a number of service projects this fall from Scouting for Food and an Eagle Scout project where one of our scouts commanded a project to create more hiking trails at a nature area in town and improve some existing trails.

As you can see Troop 109 had been very busy and we won’t be slowing down any time soon. We have events coming up to work with the Webelos from our pack and have some more campouts coming up along with a ski trip. We also have some fundraisers and service projects coming up this winter.

Please check back often on the continuing adventures of Troop 109.
